How long do our eyelash extensions last?
The duration of eyelash extensions depends on various subjective factors that vary greatly from one individual to another. Therefore, eyelash loss does not only depend on the duration of the glue (touch-ups are normally recommended every 3-4 weeks) and the natural growth of the eyelashes. Below we explain the factors that can affect the duration and resistance of the treatment:
The glue
A good quality glue can usually last up to 5-7 weeks, this is true if all the rules of application have been respected, such as if the natural lash has been degreased and treated with primer , if the glue has been applied in the correct quantity so as to envelop the natural lash and if the temperature and humidity of the environment have been controlled.
To obtain a perfect fixing of the glue I also recommend using one of these products:
- the finish that allows the definition of the drying of the glue after the treatment;
- the nano mister that solidifies the glue in an instant. With the use of this product it is not necessary to recommend the client not to wet the lashes because the glue has already reached the final fixing point.
Thermoregulation
Intended as the temperature of the environment in which the treatment is carried out: if it is higher than 22° the bond between the natural and artificial lashes will be very weak and therefore the duration could also be compromised.
Another factor that affects thermoregulation is temperature changes. If, for example, today we were in Italy with + 15° and the following day we were in Egypt where the average temperature reaches + 40°, the glue could “crack”, to all this we add frequent showers, wind and salt water that damage the resistance of the glue. This does not mean that it is not recommended to apply extensions before a beach holiday... on the contrary! They will allow you to have a stunning look without the inconvenience of running mascara for the duration of your trip. But when you return we will realize that it will be much easier to remove the extensions to proceed with the touch-up.
The lifestyle
We all have our daily habits that involve sports or wellness and our eyelashes notice all of this. For example, those who frequently perform these activities will have less eyelashes:
- swimming in the pool, as chlorine ruins the glue bond;
- lamps more than 2 times a week, the heat does not allow maximum duration;
- sweat a lot in the gym;
facial cleansing performed with steam directly on the face;
- Turkish bath or sauna.
Skin type
We all know that extensions are “afraid” of oils and consequently also fear oily skin. So if the client has skin with excessive sebum production, we will see that the touch-up will have to be repeated every 2 weeks precisely because the skin oil comes into contact with the lashes, causing the extension to fall out of the natural hair.
Natural growth
We all normally lose 3 to 6 eyelashes per day per eye. There is no need to worry because in place of the fallen one (catagen phase) a new one is already sprouting (anagen phase), which at the time of application we do not touch because it is too small and if we were to apply the extension on this eyelash we would risk breaking it. I like to call the newly born eyelashes, those of the anagen phase: "our bread for the touch-up" because in three weeks this little "eyelash" will become an adult and can be used.
In conclusion, those who have a very rapid turnover (the average is that the complete turnover of the eyelashes occurs in 2-4 months) will have to do the touch-up more often (every 2-3 weeks), while those who have slow growth can touch them up every 4 weeks.
The age
Younger girls have a faster turnover while ladies over 45-50 have a slower regrowth of all skin appendages (nails, hair, eyelashes). Sometimes ladies in the "over" group have a touch-up every 5 weeks.
The season
We all know that in autumn we lose more hair than in other seasons, the same happens with eyelashes. Hair and eyelashes do not belong to the same family, but both need the same vitamin that is especially lacking in autumn. And so we will see them more often our clients :-)
Hormones and vitamins
If our client gets pregnant, the extensions are the first to notice! A woman's body goes through many changes during pregnancy and, in the first 2-3 months, the body will continue to reject everything that is not its own, such as the extension, but usually by the fourth month it stops playing these tricks. However, this can vary from woman to woman.
For those who take vitamins, it is necessary to know that with the change of type of vitamin, rejection of the eyelash extensions may occur, but once the body has become accustomed to the new administration, everything goes back to how it was before.
Eyelashes can also be affected by taking medications, in particular they are very delicate with the intake of antibiotics.
