Lash lift: what it is, how it works, and who this treatment is suitable for
I've been studying this interesting process from various perspectives for many months now, and I'm still learning!
Unfortunately, or "fortunately," the information we have available today is still very limited, but that's right up my alley! Just as it happened when I started working in the wonderful field of eyelash extensions, here in Italy, I had no points of reference to rely on, and so I had to research, study, try, and work hard.
Now, based on my studies and the knowledge I've gained, also by consulting with leading industry masters and directly contacting manufacturers of well-known brands, I will provide you with a complete overview of what lash lamination is, how it works, and who it's suitable for.
What is Eyelash Lamination?
Eyelash lamination is a professional treatment performed directly on natural eyelashes. It consists of a perm (eyelash perm) and, if necessary, an eyelash tint. The main goal of this procedure is to nourish the hair, giving it an internal and external boost of keratin, vitamins, elasticity, and shine, making the lashes visibly healthier.
As mentioned, an eyelash perm is the foundation of lamination, and consequently, the entire procedure also allows for curling very straight lashes or tidying up crossed lashes as desired.
However, be careful not to confuse the terms: lash lift, lamination, and lash filler are not exactly the same thing. A lash lift is a simple cosmetic perm, while lamination goes further, also including a nourishing treatment. The InLei® Lash Filler represents the most advanced evolution of this concept: it was the first treatment in the world to scientifically demonstrate thickening after a cycle of 3 sessions.
How Eyelash Lamination Works: A Step-by-Step Procedure
For those wondering how eyelash lamination works in practice, here's an overview of the main steps of the treatment. The complete procedure takes approximately 60-90 minutes and requires expert hands and quality professional products.
It starts with the evaluation of the client's eyes and lashes, which is essential for choosing the appropriate rod. The lashes must be healthy, free of makeup, and without irritation. Then, the lashes and the inter-lash space are thoroughly cleaned, and under-eye pads are placed to secure the lower lashes.
After attaching the rods to the upper eyelid and lifting the lashes, the actual chemical phase begins: substances that shape, fix, color, and nourish the lashes are applied in sequence. The processing times for each substance must be precisely calculated based on the structure and porosity of the hair, which naturally varies for different lash types.
If you want to delve into the entire procedure in detail, we have prepared a comprehensive guide: LASH FILLER 25.9: how it works and how to perform it.
Who is Eyelash Lamination For?
The eyelash thickening treatment is suitable for anyone who:
- has lashes that grow too straight or downwards: in this case, it creates a more attractive and "open" look. Lashes will appear more visible and fuller, and the client can say goodbye to mechanical lash curlers;
- has very unruly or crossed lashes: in this case, we will enhance the gaze, which becomes more precise and tidy even when applying mascara;
- has very dry and damaged lashes: in this case, we nourish the lashes, making them healthier, revitalized, and nourished;
- has very thin lashes: the main function of the treatment is to thicken and lengthen the hair. (However, be aware: if the hair is truly small, for example, less than 6 mm, the visible result will be very slight);
- has very long and stiff lashes: after the lamination treatment, the hair becomes softer, silkier, and more natural;
- is taking a break from eyelash extensions: lamination is an excellent solution for taking care of your own lashes and strengthening their structure during rest periods.
How long does eyelash lamination last and how often should it be repeated?
The result of the curl is visible from the first session, and the average duration varies from 6 to 8 weeks, depending on the speed of natural hair turnover.
But there's something few people know: to make this treatment truly effective, the procedure must be repeated multiple times. It's optimal to have sessions 3-4 times in about 4 months, because lamination is a CUMULATIVE treatment, and to achieve a real result, the application must be performed consistently.
The result of lamination doesn't necessarily have to be visible to the naked eye. The thickening of the hair, in fact, can only be seen under a microscope! A common mistake is to leave the tint layer on the lashes, because it's said that this way the client remains happy precisely because they clearly see the result. But... the tint dries out and damages the hair during the subsequent 24 hours when it's recommended not to wash the lashes. ⭢ UPDATE 2026: with the new Lash Filler 25.9 protocol, lashes can be washed immediately after treatment; in fact, washing is an integral part of the protocol.

The Real Benefits of Eyelash Lamination: Pay Attention to the Substances
When we talk about the benefits of lamination, we need to have an honest discussion about the quality of the products.
NOT ALL the substances available on the market truly contain keratin, as is often claimed. Keratin plays a crucial role in hair, eyelashes, and eyebrows: the goal of the treatment is to restore a good level of keratin within the hairs, protecting them from the harmful action of ultraviolet rays, keeping them constantly hydrated, and counteracting the effects of more aggressive treatments such as coloring or perming.
Naturally, all these benefits are only achieved if the product truly contains keratin. So pay attention to the ingredients! The InLei® Lash Filler Kit has been analyzed, tested, and confirmed by a prestigious research institute in Milan, and contains functional ingredients that act on the hair structure from within.
According to European Regulation 1223/2009, the maximum concentration of hydrogen peroxide that can be applied to eyelashes is 1.5%… this also needs verification!
I have conducted several tests in recent months, collaborating with industry chemists, and I have observed with my own eyes (and with the help of microscopes) that perfect substances do exist, but you have to look for them among various options. For those who want to try the latest evolution of the treatment, the Mini Lash Filler 25.9 Kit is an excellent choice to experience firsthand the quality of InLei®'s completely vegan and VeganOK certified products.
Does Eyelash Lamination Hurt?
Another frequent question: Does eyelash lamination hurt? The short answer is no, it doesn't hurt if performed correctly with safe products by trained operators. It is a genuine SPA treatment for the eyelashes, with both curative and aesthetic purposes.
Problems arise when improvising: incorrect processing times, unsuitable products, or insufficient training can lead to damaged lashes. This is why it's crucial to rely on qualified professionals who use tested products and follow precise protocols.
Lamination is a wellness treatment
Of one thing I can be sure: eyelash lamination, filler, or keratin treatment is a SPA treatment, meaning it is primarily a treatment for the internal and external health and well-being of our eyelashes and eyebrows. The result is not purely aesthetic and is not immediately visible from the first application. Beware of anyone who claims otherwise and tries to sell you optical thickening effects caused by unremoved tint!
I hear many confused ideas and perceptions about what lamination should be, but I hope I've given you a very clear general overview.
However, we still have much to learn!
